RHUM MONTEBELLO
Our distillery is nestled in the foothills of the Petit-Bourg plain, along the road to the hamlet whose name it bears, Carrère. Its imposing structure hints at a more contemporary history, for although it was built in 1930, it changed hands during the harsh years of the Second World War, while continuing to produce. It was in 1966 that Jean MARSOLLE and his son Alain bought the company, whose crushing capacity was no more than 3 tonnes per hour!
Born in 1936 on the Guadeloupe island of Saint-Claude, Alain MARSOLLE entered the "Jesuits" school in Toulouse in 1945, where he trained as an industrial draughtsman. Returning to Guadeloupe at the age of 19, he began his sugar career in 1962 with the "Sainte-Marthe" and "Gardel" companies. In 1968, he began a distilling career with his father, and it would be another seven years before a new, more efficient entity was born.
In 1975, the "Carrère" distillery marketed its rum under the name "Rhums MONTEBELLO", and acquired new equipment. Today, the distillery is run by the fourth-generation MARSOLLE family since January 2012.
Worthy heirs to a line of Charente natives who settled in Guadeloupe as soon as the French arrived on the island, Grégory and his brother Dominique have taken over the reins left by their grandfather and father Alain, and intend to keep the tradition alive. The reputation of Rhum Montebello is well established, but the story continues.
